Opinion: Regular Season Needs Meaning

When drivers speak, fans listen.
It doesn’t matter what NASCAR officials or, certainly, media members think. When drivers speak, it resonates with the fans. That can be good or bad, depending on the situation.
You can be the judge of the latest example, which involves Brad Keselowski.
The Team Penske driver made waves earlier this week when he said that in his view, the regular season was lacking in motivation for drivers that win a race and qualify for the Chase. In Keselowski’s mind, the “win-and-you’re-in” mentality has created an atmosphere for some that fosters more of a conservative approach than trying for more trips to Victory Lane.
“Clearly, the sport is lacking some motivation once you’ve won a race,” Keselowski said. “I don’t think there’s any question that most of the competitors feel like that is not advantageous for a product we’re trying to put on, and have floated ideas to level that back out. Maybe some people will like it and maybe some won’t. We’ll have to see.
“But it’s never good to remove motivation from the field.”
