Travis Shaw rocks Oakland lefties, as Red Sox offense rolls again

BOSTON — It was one swing — in a spring training game, no less — but it offered definitive proof that, yes, Travis Shaw can hit left-handed pitching.
Shaw was still muddling through the Boston Red Sox’s minor league system when he homered off New York Yankees reliever Andrew Miller on March 11, 2015, in Tampa. Five months later, team officials still referenced that at-bat when discussing Shaw’s unexpectedly solid rookie season, which included a .329 average (27-for-82) and six homers against lefties.
And although Shaw entered Tuesday night’s game with only two hits (and nine strikeouts) in 25 at-bats against lefties this season, manager John Farrell opted to stick with him and give David Ortiz a night off against Oakland Athletics rookie starter Sean Manaea.
Good decision.
