A consummate opportunist, Diego Ulissi infiltrated a late breakaway, attacked the hard final climb, 10 kilometers from the finish, and won the Giro’s stage 4 on Tuesday. Lampre – Merida’s Italian leader rolled into Praia a Mare alone while close behind, Giant – Alpecin’s Tom Dumoulin attacked the chase to reclaim the GC lead on the race’s first day in Italy.

“It’s what we worked for. It was a hard final and we wanted to make the race hard already on the second climb of the day. We dropped Marcel Kittel there,” said Dumoulin, speaking of the Etixx – Quick-Step sprinter who had taken the pink jersey from him two days prior.
