Simmons needs thumb surgery, will miss 2 months

ANAHEIM — The Angels’ nightmare stretch of struggles and injury took another wrong turn on Monday, when it was revealed that their game-changing shortstop, Andrelton Simmons, needs thumb surgery that will probably keep him out for at least two months. 

Simmons rolled on top of the thumb while sprawling to his right to snare a hard grounder off the bat of Evan Longoria in the third inning of Sunday’s eventual 3-1 loss to the Rays and immediately came out of the game. An MRI on Monday revealed a “full thickness tear of the ulnar collateral ligament of his left thumb that will require surgery,” the Angels announced.

This type of procedure typically requires patients to be immobilized for six weeks and can keep Simmons out for two to three months.

The news comes three days after it was revealed that the Angels’ best starting pitcher, Garrett Richards, has a full-grade tear of his UCL and will likely require Tommy John surgery. Richards is …
