Aroldis Chapman returns to the major leagues on Monday after serving a 29-game suspension handed down by Rob Manfred under the domestic violence policy (note: the suspension was shortened by 1 game from its original 30). A look at what Chapman’s return means to his new team:
Chapman throws as hard as anyone
Chapman’s return could elevate the New York Yankees bullpen even further if he is able to pick up where he left off.
Chapman’s average fastball traveled 99.4 mph since the start of last season, the fastest among relievers and 2.5 mph faster than Dellin Betances. Last season Chapman threw 452 pitches of at least 100 mph. No other player (reliever or starter) threw more than 143 pitches at 100 mph.
Chapman has averaged at least 15 K per nine IP in each of the last four seasons. Other relievers have combined for three such seasons …
