Sundowns bounce back to sink Medeama

Coming off fresh from their league triumph, Mamelodi Sundowns were given a scare by Ghanaian side, Medeama SC after having to turn around a 1-0 deficit with a dramatic 3-1 win in the first leg of the 2nd 1/8th round on Saturday at the Lucas Moripe Stadium in Pretoria. Eric Kwakwa stunned the home side as early as 38 seconds into the game with a superb shot just outside of the box that gave keeper Wayne Sandilands no chance to give the visitors the lead. With a valuable goal to their name, the visitors opted to take the foot off the peddle while Sundowns failed to find their usual fluidity in the first half, resulting in the game not living up to expectations. Coming into the second half, Sundowns slowly gained their confidence as Mzikayise Mashaba almost got his side level when his left footed strike from close range bounced off the woodwork after tearing through the Medeama defence in search of the equalizer Substitute Benjamin Bature came close to extending his side’s lead after finding himself with just the Sundowns keeper to beat, but saw his effort go wide of goal. Medeama looked to be home and dry but it was not meant to be for the Ghanaians after a lapse of concentration saw them conceding three goals …
