Aside of Novak Djokovic’s rebound after his setback in Monte Carlo and Andy Murray reaching his second straight final in the tournament, the biggest storyline of the Madrid Open was Roger Federer pulling out of it with a back injury. It was yet another jolt for the world no. 3, who’d just made his comeback in Monte Carlo after a near two-month lay-off because of knee injury, bringing the total tournaments he’d skipped this year to five. But while his plans went southward in Madrid, he’s back in Rome before gearing up for the second Major of the season.
