KANSAS CITY, Kan. – There were a lot of ways to describe what Kansas Speedway has meant to Kyle Busch over the years. Waterloo. Achilles Heel. Little Big Horn. Those unpleasant analogies can now be struck from the records now that Busch has wiped Kansas off his list of tracks where he’d never scored a Sprint Cup Series win. His victory Saturday night in the Go Bowling 400 was his third of the year and the way he’s going most certainly not going to be his last. But more importantly it may be looked upon as a milestone win for the defending Sprint Cup Series champion. Despite having success at Kansas in both the Camping World Truck Series and XFINITY Series, try as he might Busch could not replicate the same results in NASCAR’s top division. His performance in the Chase race of 2014 might have been the most telling when Busch as usual had a fast and competitive car, but appeared to push the envelope so hard at least a couple of times he spun out and hit the wall. It wasn’t in his DNA to simply take a “decent” finish and move on but rather continue to press for a win. It was an admirable performance but maybe a seminal moment. Since then Busch has seen his Kansas Cup efforts improve and came into Saturday night’s race on a streak of two straight top-five finishes and an average finish of 20.3.
