You’ve Gotta Be Kidding Me! Things In Tennis That Are Not Funny (Part I)

Noise. It is serious times when the qualifying round starts at tournaments and it being a chance for players to get a chance at landing in the main draw as well as families can watch a live tennis event for free. Fans come into the venue, some new to tennis, they sit down and before long, they are making noise. The children are stamping their feet, the parents are talking to them and getting their lunch together, but not far away some are talking on the phone. They are whispering, but it’s still disturbing and not funny. The fans are distracting and people start complaining. Players have to stop their play waiting for people to be quiet and sit down. The noise of the families in the stand and the ones on cellphones has created a noise-filled environment. This scene was real at the 2016 Australian Open when Nick Kyrgios was playing Tomas Berdych when he heard disturbing music in the direction of the stands. Kyrgios protested to the chair ump, “Mate, are you ok? There’s music playing in the crowd while we re playing. I’ve told you seven times. Am I hearing things? Mate, it’s a circus”. This behavior is now not funny and needs to be stopped. The solution: Pamphlets should be handed out on site of the venue as to the behavior code patrons should follow.
