Pirates’ Francisco Liriano stymies Cardinals again

ST. LOUIS — The St. Louis Cardinals caught the Pittsburgh Pirates at the right time — with one exception. The Pirates had dropped their previous four games, including a sweep to the league-leading Chicago Cubs, and the Cardinals were riding high after taking three of four games from the Philadelphia Phillies.
That one exception was that the Pirates sent Francisco Liriano, a notorious thorn in the Cardinals’ side, to the mound Friday in the first game of a three-game set. To put it in perspective, Liriano to the Cardinals is like tree pollen to an allergy sufferer.
