Martinez pulled early with fatigue

ST. LOUIS — Fatigue issues prompted Friday night’s early exit by Carlos Martinez, who left his start against the Pirates after 3 1/3 innings. He will be reevaluated on Saturday, the Cardinals announced.
Martinez pitched ill five days prior as he continued to recover from a respiratory illness that swept through the Cardinals’ clubhouse. Despite his condition, Martinez held the Nationals to one hit through his five innings and finished 6 2/3 in all.
He appeared strong early against the Pirates on Friday night, too, allowing one run over his first three innings. By the fourth, however, Martinez looked out of sorts. Nine of the first 11 pitches he threw in the frame were …
