Rory in mix despite late struggles at Quail Hollow

After an opening-round 73, Rory McIlroy found himself eight back of the leaders and in need of a charge just to ensure he would be around for the weekend.
McIlroy got that hot start he desperately needed Friday, firing a front-nine 32 to make the turn at 3 under for the tournament. A birdie on the 10th moved McIlroy to 4 under, only four back of the lead, and all signs pointed to the defending champion posting a low number and inserting himself into contention.
Instead of continuing his charge, McIlroy stumbled home to post a 3-under 69 and move into T24 at 2 under for the tournament. He fought with the driver on the way in, missing fairways to the right on four holes.
The first of those wayward drives came on No. 12 and led to a bogey. He got that back with a birdie on 14, but he failed to birdie the par-5 15th after another drive slid right on him and the same happened on 16. Still, he was 4 under for the tournament and 5 under on the round entering 17, but the Green Mile jumped up to bite him, as it did Thursday. …
