Fowler surges into top five with 2nd-round 68

Rickie Fowler was one of the big movers Friday at the Wells Fargo Championship, firing a 4-under 68 to vault into T5 at 5 under for the tournament, three back of leader Andrew Loupe.
Fowler played alongside his friend Rory McIlroy for the second straight day and after both spun the tires a bit Thursday, Friday brought out the best from both players early in the round.
“It was nice, we both kind of got things going,” Fowler said after the round. “Rory birdied 5 where I didn’t get one to go. We kind of started feeding off each other it felt like a little bit, making birdies and kind of getting the round going. It was fun.”
Where McIlroy stumbled late with two bogeys to close the round on 17 and 18, Fowler was able to carry some positive momentum into the weekend. After his lone bogey of the round on the par-3 13th, Fowler made back-to-back birdies on 14 and 15 and then was able to play the Green Mile — 16, 17 and 18 at Quail Hollow — in even par, including a …
