Richards’ status for Friday in doubt

MILWAUKEE — The Angels aren’t yet certain if their ace, Garrett Richards, will be able to make his next scheduled start on Friday against the visiting Rays.

Richards exited Sunday’s start against the Rangers at Globe Life Park after only 79 pitches because of dehydration and cramping, caused largely by a 33-pitch fourth inning. Richards was evaluated by doctors in Arlington and did not make his between-starts bullpen session, playing catch only off flat ground at Miller Park.

The Angels, off on Thursday, are apparently being extra careful with their best starting pitcher.

“We’ll have to make a determination,” manager Mike Scioscia said of starting Richards on Friday. “We’re going to be cautious.”

The Angels’ starting rotation has quickly become the team’s greatest area of concern.
