The Toronto Raptors thought an extra five minutes could help them win their first Game 1 in five years. But Dwyane Wade had other plans.
After Kyle Lowry hit a half-court buzzer-beater to force overtime, Wade said enough was enough and took over, scoring six of Miami’s 12 points in the extra period, including getting a steal and scoring on the game’s final possession to finally put away Toronto, 102-96, giving the Heat a 1-0 lead in the best-of-seven second-round series.
With the win, the Heat, who were just 20-21 on the road this year and lost two of three in Charlotte in the first round, took away Toronto’s home-court advantage, and in doing so, immediately put themselves in the driver’s seat. In playoff history, when the road team wins Game 1 they are 25-10. On the flipside, this was the seventh straight Game 1 the Raptors have lost — the fifth straight at home — dating back to 2001 when they defeated the Philadelphia 76ers.
