ATP MADRID: Inspired del Potro overcomes Thiem, easy wins for Monfils, Kyrgios and Fognini

Juan Martin del Potro made a winning start in Madrid Masters after very solid victory against 14th seed Dominic Thiem, beating the Austrian 7-6 6-3. Delpo fired 10 aces and saved all 7 break points he faced, breaking Thiem once in the second set to keep the lead until the end. His service and forehand worked very well and he manages to stay in the rallies from his backhand wing. Of course, Thiem played long Munich final just two days ago against Kohlschreiber, and he for sure wasn’t at his best in this match. Del Potro was hitting strong from the very start, losing only 4 points in the first 4 service games. Thiem struggled much more to find the right shots, saving 3 break points in the first part of the set. Still, he was 5-4 up, leaving Delpo to serve to stay in the set in the next game, and …
