Bayern Munich vs. Atletico Madrid: Team News, Preview, Live Stream, TV Info
- Updated: May 3, 2016
Bayern Munich play host to Atletico Madrid on Tuesday in perhaps the most anticipated game of the season for both sides as they face off in the second leg of their UEFA Champions League semi-finals tie.
The Spanish side won the first leg 1-0 at home, with Saul Niguez’s brilliant solo effort being enough to separate the contestants over 90 minutes. And now the impetus is on Pep Guardiola to formulate a comeback as Diego Simeone and company hold a more favorable hand.
Guardiola was bullish heading into the second leg, telling journalists over the weekend (via Eurosport): “The tie isn’t over yet.
“We have another game left [in the tie], and if we lose it then you can kill me, but we still have a chance.”
Bayern face a real challenge in Atleti, who enter the match in excellent form. The Madrid side have won seven consecutive games in all competitions, the last time they failed to win being the first leg of the Champions League quarter-finals against Barcelona in a tie they would later win.
Although the visitors will only need a draw to advance, coach Diego Simeone vowed to go for goals and try to win the second leg as well.
“Let’s go out and win,” he told reporters in a pre-match press conference (via Goal). “We know that the draw gets us through but we cannot think of staying in it. Winning is the essence of the game.”
Simeone knows a thing or two about winning, and Atleti currently stand well in the running to win the double of the Champions League and La Liga.
Just 90 minutes stand between him and a second appearance in the final of Europe’s most coveted club competition in three seasons, although the same could be said of a dangerous Bayern that have scored freely against even elite defenses like that of Juventus. A potential classic awaits.
