Benoit won’t come off DL when eligible Friday

OAKLAND — Veteran reliever Joaquin Benoit felt good after playing catch in the outfield Sunday at Safeco Field, but the Mariners right-hander did not accompany the team on its seven-day road trip and probably won’t throw off the mound until the end of this week, manager Scott Servais said Monday.
Benoit is eligible to come off the 15-day disabled list on Friday, but he’ll need more to return from the sore shoulder that has hindered him since Spring Training.
“He felt really good [throwing Sunday],” Servais said. “Thumbs up on that one. He should be ready for a bullpen by the time we get back home or maybe just before that.”
Servais said he didn’t know yet if Benoit would need a Minor League rehab stint before rejoining the club. The 38-year-old posted a 3.60 ERA with two hits, four walks and four strikeouts in five innings over five appearances before going on the DL a week ago.
