Aussie punters for Jets: sign Hackett, pick Edwards

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. — The New York Jets have set up a punting competition that will be followed around the world.

The Jets went Down Under on Saturday by adding two Australians to the roster, Lachlan Edwards and Tom Hackett, both of whom grew up playing Australian Rules Football near Melbourne.

Edwards, who punted for Sam Houston State, was drafted in the seventh round. A short time later, Hackett, a two-time winner of the Ray Guy Award, signed a rookie free-agent contract with the Jets, the Utah football program announced on Twitter.

It’s Aussie versus Aussie for the Jets, who began the day with no punter on their roster. Their previous punter, Ryan Quigley, signed with the Philadelphia Eagles as a free agent.
