Bellew, Makabu to fight for vacant title May 29

Ilunga “Junior” Makabu and Tony Bellew will square off for a vacant cruiserweight world title on May 29 at Goodison Park in Bellew’s hometown of Liverpool, England, Matchroom Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn announced Friday.
The fight, which will take place at the home stadium of the Everton Football Club, will be to fill the vacancy left when Grigory Drozd (40-1, 28 KOs), of Russia, was stripped because of inactivity stemming from injuries that twice forced him to pull out of a fight against Makabu, the mandatory challenger.
Drozd, who has not fought since his first defense in May, was named a titleholder “in recess.” When he is ready to return, he’ll be able to fight the winner of Bellew-Makabu, if he wants.
