Martin expected to avoid DL for neck spasms

ST. PETERSBURG — Russell Martin is not going to require a stint on the 15-day disabled list, but he’s also not ready to play every day because of a lingering neck issue.
Martin has been in and out of the lineup over the last week because of neck spasms. He was held out again Saturday night against the Rays, but Blue Jays manager John Gibbons believes his catcher does not need an extended period of time off.
The 33-year-old Martin clearly has been impacted by the injury as he struck out nine consecutive times earlier this week, which came within one of tying the Major League record set by Rick Ankiel in 2013. Even so, Toronto is going to pick the …
