Blah pitching, bad fielding still plagues Cardinals

ST. LOUIS — The St. Louis Cardinals have had a mediocre month due, surprisingly, to mediocre pitching and worse-than-mediocre fielding.
After a 6-1 loss to the Washington Nationals on Saturday, the Cardinals are 12-12, six games worse than they were after 24 games last season and six games behind the first-place Chicago Cubs. Jaime Garcia (1-2) pitched well after the first inning, but by then the Cardinals were in a deep hole that they never climbed out of. Jayson Werth launched a three-run home run off the Cardinals’ lefty in the Nats’ four-run first.
