WTA MADRID: Elina Svitolina and Ekaterina Makarova Reach Second Round, Giorgi Upsets Errani

It was a hectic opening day at the Madrid Open with first round and last-round qualifying matches taking place in tandem. Of the handful of first round matches held, three featured seeded players in 12th seed Elina Svitolina, 15th seed Sara Errani and 16th seed Sloane Stephens.
Here’s how then the results transpired:Elina Svitolina, who started off the day’s proceedings for the women, saw off a tenacious Yanina Wickmayer in three sets 4-6, 6-3, 6-4. The Belgian started off strongly by winning the opening set, but the Ukrainian made her way back into the match playing with more intent and focus. Wickmayer had a total of five break points, all of which came in the first set and Svitolina saved three of those. She also had five break points, throughout the match, off Wickmayer’s serve and converted three of those. Both players won 77% points off …
