Romandie race jury zaps Zakarin’s stage 2 win
- Updated: April 28, 2016
Defending champion Ilnur Zakarin looks to be on winning form again at Tour de Romandie, but a finish-sprint kerfuffle saw the Russian relegated and Movistar’s Nairo Quintana awarded the win on Thursday. Stage 2 offered the race’s first uphill finish. Quintana was quick to attack and Katusha’s Russian leader followed. The two saved their matches for one final sprint — Zakarin was first across the line, but Quintana raised his arm in protest after Zakarin deviated from his line. A little while after the 173.9km stage finished in Morgins, Switzerland, the race jury awarded the stage to Quintana.
