Francis Roig: ‘Nadal competes to be the GOAT, the goal is to win more Grand Slams’

Rafael Nadal has been on a comeback trail with good results in Indian Wells, Monte Carlo and Barcelona. Speaking about this good form, Nadal’s second coach shared the reasons for Nadal’s positive comeback.
‘Continuity is vital,’ said Francis Roig to El Espanol . ‘In order to be confident, there is nothing better than winning matches. All the conversation we have had were about the same topic; yes, you are doing well, you are training and working, but he played well one week and then not so much, in the other. Something like this (winning matches continuously) lacked. But the wins make you more safe and getting used to them, influences you in an important way.’ The 48-year-old coach also praised Rafa’s strength to keep practicing as he said, ‘How is it possible that he regained his level? Magic does not exist. You have to work and try to have the best predisposition possible to compete and cancel fears. At the end, it’s the player who is on court and it’s him who has to accept and overcome nerves. Last year, he had anxiety that did not allow him to control shots. This year, it’s been different, with some bad results at the Australian Open. Maybe there he was willing to do well.
