Dexter Fowler fiasco fails to foul up Orioles

When the Baltimore Orioles whiffed on Dexter Fowler in February — you remember the whole he-signed-but-he-didn’t-really-sign episode — it was supposed to be a killer.
In an alternate universe where Fowler actually lands in Baltimore, he’s the Birds’ right fielder and leadoff hitter. Which means that Mark Trumbo, instead of playing right field, is the designated hitter. Which means that Pedro Alvarez, instead of signing in late February and becoming the designated hitter, isn’t an Oriole.
Offensively, it’s a Fowler-for-Alvarez swap. Although the difference between those two players isn’t as great as the first couple of weeks of 2016 might suggest — in Chicago, Fowler’s been mashing like Ernie Banks, while Alvarez looks more like Ernie from Sesame Street — there’s no denying that Fowler’s the more productive player.
