Long ball lifts Rays past Yankees, Michael Pineda

NEW YORK — Those weren’t cheap Yankee Stadium home runs that Michael Pineda served up Sunday.
No, those were shots, rockets, or whatever else you want to call the four long homers the Tampa Bay Rays hit off Pineda in the first five innings of their 8-1 win over the New York Yankees.
The Yankees’ nine-game homestand was mostly consumed with questions about their ability to score runs, particularly against left-handed pitching. The same questions could have been raised Sunday, because the Yankees’ hitters couldn’t do much with Rays lefty Drew Smyly, with just six hits in seven easy innings.
