The New York Islanders are looking to advance beyond the first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs for the first time since 1993 after taking a 3-2 series lead over the Florida Panthers with a dramatic double-overtime win Friday night. They can advance to the second round (against the Tampa Bay Lightning) with a win at Barclays Center on Sunday night (7 ET). Here’s what to watch for:
Tavares series MVP: Is there a better hockey player on the planet at this moment than Islanders captain John Tavares? The Islanders have been outmatched in terms of possession and quality scoring chances throughout this series — the Panthers are the leading team in the enhanced statistical category of shot attempts in close games among all playoff teams — but whenever Tavares is on the ice, he’s a difference-maker. He has practically willed the Islanders to the verge of a first-round upset over the Atlantic Division winners from Florida, leading the Isles with seven points in five games. He is tied for fourth in the NHL in shots on goal.
