Masahiro Tanaka’s quiet dominance

NEW YORK — It is no secret that Masahiro Tanaka is not the pitcher he had been pre-July 2014, when he suffered a partial tear of the UCL in pitching elbow in a game against the Cleveland Indians.
To that point, Tanaka was a dominant force and a legitimate AL Cy Young Award candidate in his first season of big-league ball. To that point, he was 12-3 with a 2.27 ERA and 140 strikeouts in 122 innings.
Since then, his record has become less overwhelming — 14-9 with an ERA of 3.74 — and he has throw fewer four-seam fastballs, perhaps to protect his damaged elbow.
