O’s place Gallardo on DL, reinstate Matusz

KANSAS CITY — A day after exiting Friday’s game vs. the Royals with right shoulder discomfort, Orioles starter Yovani Gallardo was placed on the 15-day disabled list with right shoulder bicep tendinitis.
The move opened a slot for left-handed reliever Brian Matusz to be reinstated from the DL in time for Saturday’s game in Kansas City.
Gallardo, a 10-year veteran, had never been on the DL for an arm-related issue and has made at least 30 starts in seven consecutive seasons. The 30-year-old lasted just two innings Friday in Kansas City before exiting with shoulder discomfort, and he traveled back to Baltimore to be examined Saturday.
“My shoulder just didn’t feel right. To be honest, it was one of those feelings that I’ve never had my whole career,” Gallardo said Friday night after the 45-pitch outing. “I’ve never had any issues with my shoulder, and I hadn’t been [having any]. For some reason, in the bullpen it just didn’t …
