Familiarity, teammates and small goals help Brock Osweiler digest Texans’ playbook

HOUSTON — Each night after the Texans’ four-hour offseason program, quarterback Brock Osweiler retreats to the office inside the home he and his wife bought to spend more time on the Texans’ playbook.

He spends hours there, studying. The hard copy needs a three-inch binder to fit all the material. Osweiler got the digital tablet version, easier to tote but no less daunting.

“As a quarterback in this league, I’m a firm believer that you need to know the playbook better than anybody,” Osweiler said. “You need to know it better than the coordinator who has been in that system for years. The way you do that is by studying. So, as soon as I was able to get that iPad, I dove right into it.”

Rather than overwhelm himself, Osweiler set small daily goals. He’d digest a few pages at a time before moving on to learn more.

This week Osweiler finally got to meet with his coaches to start learning from them. But studying, the offseason time he spent with his teammates and a hint of familiarity with the Texans’ offense all helped him prepare …
