Heavy-hitting Orioles get wiffle-wacky during BP

BALTIMORE — Just because Ryan Flaherty hasn’t played in over a week doesn’t mean he’s not working hard. The Baltimore Orioles’ super-utility man took extra batting practice Thursday — with a wiffle bat sticking out of his shirt.
The drill, which is hitting coach Scott Coolbaugh’s brainchild, is meant to keep the batter’s posture upright, making it easier to get to inside pitches. Coolbaugh says that he first hatched the idea back when he was coaching in the Texas Rangers organization.
His first guinea pig? Former Ranger (and reigning home run king) Chris Davis.
“It’s something we used with Davis back in the day in the minor leagues,” said Coolbaugh, a 49-year-old former big-league third baseman. “He knows how to correct himself now.”
