Browns coach: ‘Franchise QB’ used too loosely

The Cleveland Browns, now as ever, are one of the most quarterback-needy teams in the NFL. Since the Browns re-entered the league back in 1999, 16 quarterbacks have thrown at least 100 passes for the team. The full list:

Yeah. It’s that ugly. The current group of QBs on the roster isn’t much better. It includes McCown, Austin Davis, Connor Shaw, and Robert Griffin III. None of them seems all that much like the long-term answer, and so the Browns were rumored to be in search of the ever-elusive “franchise quarterback” in next week’s draft, perhaps with the No. 2 pick. Now that the Browns have traded down from No. 2 to No. 8 and picked up a bunch of extra selections for their troubles, head coach Hue Jackson was asked if he thinks there’s a “franchise quarterback” available outside that first tier of players.
