Chargers’ Gordon: ‘I was terrible’ as a rookie

Melvin Gordon’s first season spent in the NFL netted just 641 rushing yards. He averaged 3.5 yards per carry. He failed to reach the end zone for the Chargers. His season ended with a knee injury.
With his sophomore season nearing, Gordon, the 15th-overall pick a year ago, offered a brutally honest assessment of last year. In short, it was “terrible.”
“It was terrible,” Gordon said, per the Chargers’ website. “I was terrible.”
Well, then.
Gordon’s not wrong — he wasn’t good — but it’s also important to consider the factors that led to his disappointing rookie campaign, namely the offensive line. According to NFL.com, Pro Football Focus credited Gordon with 34 broken tackles — the ninth-most for a running back that handled 50 percent of a team’s handoffs.
