Hughes seeks ‘guidance on grappling’

Stoke City boss Mark Hughes believes managers and players require more guidance on the issue of ‘grappling’ in the penalty area.
The topic is on the agenda following Sunday’s fractious encounter between Leicester and West Ham when incidents of impeding opponents preceded most free-kicks and corners into the box, and led to the Londoners being awarded an 84th-minute penalty.
Hughes accepts any amount of ‘grappling’ constitutes a foul and says many people in the game remain “in the dark” on how best to deal with it.
Speaking ahead of Saturday’s trip to Manchester City, Hughes said: “Grappling has always been prevalent and always been there.
“The referees and powers that be, on occasions, have a purge where they stamp down on it but then revert back to type.When it happens it is basically a foul in the penalty area but it is difficult to clarify what is allowed and what isn’t.
