A succession of soft dismissals left Bangladesh in danger of slumping to a 2-0 series defeat after New Zealand took a 65-run first-innings lead on the fourth morning in Christchurch. The match was in the balance when play resumed following a washed-out third day and remained in the balance, given New Zealand would need to bat last, even after Henry Nicholls’ 98 had given them the lead.
In just 36.2 overs, however, Bangladesh were halfway through yet another second-innings meltdown. At tea, they were 100 for 5 – effectively 35 for 5 – and only one of those five wickets had come off a defensive shot.
