Mariners acquire Gallardo from O’s for Smith

SEATTLE — After weeks of pursuing available options, Mariners general manager Jerry Dipoto moved to bolster the team’s rotation on Friday by acquiring veteran right-hander Yovani Gallardo from the Orioles in a trade for outfielder Seth Smith.
Smith provides Baltimore with a needed left-handed-hitting outfielder, while Gallardo fills Seattle’s rotation hole created by Dipoto’s earlier trade of Taijuan Walker to the D-backs in a five-player swap.

Gallardo has a career record of 108-83 with a 3.79 ERA over 10 Major League seasons, and he was a National League All-Star in 2010 for the Brewers. The 30-year-old went 13-11 with a 3.42 ERA in 33 starts for Texas in 2015, then was 6-8 with a 5.42 ERA in 23 starts after signing with Baltimore last season.
“Gallardo gives us the veteran presence that we have been searching for,” said Dipoto. “He has a track record of durability and success as a starting pitcher. After examining the free agent and trade market, Yovani is the best fit for our club as we move forward this offseason.”
Smith has a career slash line of .261/.344/.447 over 10 seasons in which he’s primarily been used in a platoon role. The 34-year-old hit .249 with 16 home runs …
