O’s get OF Smith for Gallardo in swap with M’s

BALTIMORE — Seeking to bolster their outfield, the Orioles acquired Seth Smith from the Mariners on Friday in exchange for right-handed pitcher Yovani Gallardo and cash considerations.
The move, while slightly shocking, makes sense for Baltimore, as it would have entered Spring Training with six candidates for five rotation spots. Gallardo was one of three Orioles — along with Ubaldo Jimenez and Wade Miley — in a contract year in 2017.
Smith, a left-handed hitter, helps balance out the O’s lineup and gives them solid defense — two key points in Baltimore’s offseason search.
