Top seed Rafael Nadal booked his place in the quarter-finals at the Barcelona Open with a routine 6-2, 6-2 win over fellow Spaniard Albert Montanes on Thursday.
The eight-time former champion was challenged early on by veteran Montanes but found his groove midway through the opening set and never relinquished control.
Second seed and defending champion Kei Nishikori plays his third-round match against Jeremy Chardy later on Thursday.
