Wydad eliminate African champions Mazembe

Title-holders TP Mazembe of the Democratic Republic of Congo were eliminated from the CAF Champions League on Wednesday after drawing 1-1 at home to Wydad Casablanca of Morocco. The result, coupled with a 2-0 last 16 first leg loss in North Africa, meant the five-time champions lost 3-1 on aggregate and were demoted to the CAF Confederation Cup. Malian Salif Coulibaly, one of many foreigners in a multi-national Mazembe side, raised hopes of a second leg comeback by scoring with a bullet header off a first half corner. But Reda Hajhouj levelled with time almost up, shooting across Mazembe goalkeeper Sylvain Gbohouo into the far corner of the net in Lubumbashi. It was the sixth goal this season in the premier African club competition for Hajhouj — one less than leading scorer Mfon Udoh from Enyimba of Nigeria. Enyimba will join 1992 champions Wydad and six other clubs in the May 24 group draw thanks to a 4-3 penalty shootout win at Etoile Sahel of Tunisia.
