Jimmie Johnson Ties Richard Petty and Dale Earnhardt with 7 Championships Johnson’s incredible career reached a new zenith with his record-tying seventh Cup title putting him in the record books with Hall of Famers Petty and Earnhardt. It wasn’t easy by any means for Johnson who needed a dramatic restart with three laps to go to win the season finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway and the title. 2. One of NASCAR’s Greatest Characters – Tony Stewart Says Goodbye It’s safe to say there will never be another quite like Stewart in the NASCAR world. He won three Cup titles in his career but his impact was far more than his accomplishments on the race track. Stewart’s bold manner and fun-loving demeanor was a throwback to some of the greatest stars in the sport’s history. 3. NASCAR’s Most Popular Driver Dale Earnhardt Jr Sidelined A seemingly non-violent crash in mid-summer turned out to cause another concussion for Earnhardt Jr., who stepped out of the car the remainder of the year. Earnhardt’s decision to admit his symptoms brought a much-needed focus on the dangers of head injuries in auto racing and added to his legacy.
