Koreshkov on Bendo fight and MMA goals: ‘I want to earn a lot of money’

Andrey Koreshkov is sometihng of a forgotten figure in Bellator. In part, that may have to do with the fact that Bellator’s welterweight title hasn’t quite managed to be the same high profile belt that the lightweight and lower divisions have. Ben Askren ruled the division for years, and was known for his wrestling dominance, but he wasn’t exactly a fan favorite.

Douglas Lima held the title for more than a year, but never defended it successfully, finally losing the title to Koreshkov in July of 2015. Koreshkov himself has yet to put the title on the line. Without a history of exciting title fights and with several long periods of inactivity for the belt, it’s not hard to see how even a relatively exciting fighter like Koreshkov and his title might have fallen off the radar.

However, he’s jumping back into the MMA consciousness in a big way this weekend, when he takes on former UFC and WEC lightweight champion Benson Henderson, in what will be Henderson’s first fight for his new promotion, and the biggest fight of Koreshkov’s career. It’s a statement that Koreshkov himself readily agreed with, as he told Bloody Elbow:

“This fight is going to be called the biggest fight in my career.”

“Yes, I agree that this fight is going to be called the biggest fight in my career.” Koreshkov agreed when asked if he felt that was a fair statement. “And the reason for that is that my opponent, Ben Henderson, he has a really huge name recognition and following. And that makes this fight so big from a fan’s perspective.”
