Bangladesh’s bowlers bounced back from the Christchurch mauling, giving themselves a fair chance to level the series as New Zealand were kept to a total of 251 in Nelson. It was the first time Bangladesh conceded less than 300 bowling first in the country.
Only Neil Broom, having returned to the ODI side for the first time in more than six years, applied himself to any effect. Though his team was nine down when he was on 99, he was rewarded with the maiden ODI hundred with a quick single in the 48th over. He finished unbeaten on 109 off 106 balls with eight fours and three sixes.
On a day bathed in sunshine, and on a pitch slower than normal at Saxton Oval, New Zealand struggled to bat at their usual high tempo. Bangladesh captain Mashrafe Mortaza led the way with the ball, taking 3 for 49 while Shakib Al Hasan and Taskin Ahmed finished with two wickets each.
