You might think Peter ‘Snakebite’ Wright, the cartoonish entertainer of the oche, doesn’t have a worry in the world as he dances into Alexandra Palace in a tornado of garish colour.

The party never stops for Wright, as his theme music attests, or so it seems. But underneath the mohican is a surprisingly shy individual, who may be working in a mechanics had he not stunned expectation by reaching the World Championship final three years ago.

A runners-up finish, as the sacrificial lamb to Michael van Gerwen’s first world title, came with Wright as the world No 16. He was struggling to make ends meet outside of the esteemed top 10, and may have already quit had it not been for Joanna – Mrs Snakebite – his wife, hairdresser, and chief supporter.

“At the beginning of the tournament, me and Jo said ‘this is our last one’. If I didn’t do well, I wouldn’t have been able to play the following season. It had come to that,” Wright exclusively told Sky Sports.

Is this melodrama, or is Wright serious? “Yes. I would have gone back to work, and just played local leagues. I would have been a tyre and exhaust fitter. Servicing cars, stuff like that.

“But that World Championship got me into the Premier League, then the World Series of Darts. I said ‘I’ve got a chance’. Other players have got to my position, not worked hard, and dropped down the rankings, out of the top 32.
