The SwimVortex Readers’ Choice Awards 2016
Olympic Year and all lanes led to Rio and the 2016 Olympic Games. Our readers’ poll this year is not quite a mirror and match of the SwimVortex Panel choices but the two lists are very closely matched.
The Olympic Games is where the biggest prizes of the year were won. Gold count counted. For top overall swimmer of the year Katie Ledecky tops the men, USA teammate Michael Phelps closest and Adam Peaty (GBR) the only other entry in the race.
Phelps was the Reader’s Choice for the Carlile Cup for Lifetime Achievement in the year that saw the passing of the man we named the cup after, Forbes Carlile. The Carlile Cup, however, goes to Shirley Babashoff this year, her’s a tale that speaks to the deeper meaning of lifetime (and more on that in the coming week)
Ledecky claimed the women’s category by a substantial margin, while the men’s race went to Phelps, 23 gold atop 28 medals in all – and the biggest haul among men at his Rio 2016 swansong.
Our ballot did not include this category for readers but many made their view known with a note on ‘race of the year’. The verdict was overwhelming; we’re very happy …
