Athletic Bilbao edged within two points of La Liga’s top six after defeating Celta Vigo 2-1 on Monday evening, when Aritz Aduriz and Mikel San Jose scored in the final 10 minutes to pull off a last-gasp comeback.

Striker Iago Aspas slotted Celta into a 1-0 lead early in the second half after hitting the woodwork twice in the opening period, but Facundo Roncaglia’s 80th-minute red card provided a turning point for the hosts.

After a shaky first half, Los Leones roared back with ferocity to give the home crowd something to cheer about, bounding into La Liga’s upper echelons as a result of their fifth successive home win.

Manager Ernesto Valverde has once again shaped San Mames into a fortress, while Celta remain in 12th as Week 16 came to a close, now five points below their Monday opponents.
