Liverpool climbed back within six points of Premier League leaders Chelsea on Monday after a 94th-minute strike from Sadio Mane gave the Reds an early Christmas present, beating the Toffees 1-0 in the Merseyside derby.
The two local rivals engaged in a rather dull tug-of-war for large chunks of the Goddison Park clash, but Mane’s perseverance saw the Senegal international tap home a Daniel Sturridge rebound to move his side back into second.
The result means manager Ronald Koeman’s side failed to build on last Tuesday’s 2-1 win over Arsenal and remain ninth in the standings, a considerable 14 points and seven places lower than their derby foes.
