La Liga Table 2016 Week 16: Standings and Final Scores After Sunday
- Updated: December 18, 2016
Barcelona cut the gap to La Liga leaders Real Madrid to three points as they prevailed 4-1 over Espanyol at the Camp Nou in the Catalan derby on Sunday.
Luis Suarez netted in either half, and Jordi Alba added the third before Lionel Messi polished off the win following David Lopez’s well-worked goal for the visitors.
Elsewhere on Sunday, Leganes and Eibar played out a 1-1 draw at the Estadio Municipal de Butarque while bottom-of-the-table Osasuna were downed 2-0 by Deportivo La Coruna.
Read on for a recap of the action along with the updated standings after the weekend.
Sunday Recap
Barcelona were completely dominant for the majority of the game against Espanyol.
Suarez’s opener in the 18th minute was as much about Andres Iniesta’s assist as it was about the finish.
The Spanish veteran floated an inch-perfect ball over the Espanyol defence for the onrushing Suarez to fire into the far corner to put Barca ahead.
Suarez and Iniesta’s delightful combinations were a feature of the opening 45 minutes, with the latter running the show in the middle of the park, per OptaJose:
1 – Andrés Iniesta attempted more passes (46) and made more touches (55) than any other player in the first half of this derby. Vital. pic.twitter.com/fi6TvVS41e
