GBR Gains Summed Up By Resilience Of Calum Jarvis & Lizzie Simmonds At Winter Meet

On the last day of racing at the ASA Winter Meet at Ponds Forge in Sheffield, Bath clubmates Calum Jarvis and Lizzie Simmonds provided a glimpse of challenge endured through the ability to carry on in the face of setback and the disappointment of being a world champion teamster locked out not only of the Olympic Games but the final in which he might have made that cut back in spring.

Short-course and not the same kind of environment, what with the Peatys, Guys and O’Connor’s of the realm off at the ball and in the midst of getting ready for future battles beyond a fine Olympic season for them and Britain.

Even so, on a day when Eleanor Faulkner, on 1:55.63 in the 200m freestyle, topped a tight battle to emerge at the helm of performances measured on points, Jarvis and Simmonds reminded themselves what the qworkl is all about: racing, winning.

Jarvis was one of the Great Britain quartet that claimed an historic world title in the 4x200m freestyle in Kazan last year. Come Olympic trials, a place in the 200m final was the first requisite to a shot at a ticket to Rio 2016 and the Olympic Games. Jarvis missed the mark, out before the showdown was swum. It will have hurt, especially as he watched the GBR quartet race to silver in Rio. The strength to carry on: essential.

He did just that and today made the poster of those summing up a significant line in the story of Britain’s revival in the pool: resilience.
