Australia worked their way through Pakistan’s middle order to get to within five wickets of victory by the dinner break on a rain-interrupted fourth day of the Gabba Test.

Mitchell Starc, Jackson Bird and Nathan Lyon claimed a wicket apiece after Azhar Ali and Younis Khan had delayed the home side’s progress with help from some unfavourable weather, which delayed play by more than an hour either side of an early tea.

The showers meant a far later than previously scheduled finish time, meaning Australia will have the chance to wrap up the Test under floodlights on the fourth evening.
